We Stand with Adam

A statement from Rob Koczkar, CEO, Social Ventures Australia

The discussion in the community regarding Adam Goodes this week has been concerning to many. As the leader of an organisation committed both to improving the lives of the most vulnerable in our community, and to reconciliation with our Indigenous sisters and brothers in particular, I believe it is appropriate to call this issue for what it is. Racism.

Let me state that at SVA we acknowledge and celebrate the wonderful contribution that Indigenous people in particular, but all people of diverse backgrounds, make both to SVA and to Australia. Through our work with many Indigenous organisations and individuals over the years we have seen the fundamental and healing role connection to culture has for Indigenous Australians and their communities.

I applaud Adam Goodes for proudly sharing and celebrating his culture, and for challenging the racist attitudes he has encountered all too often.

Racism has no constructive part to play in our community and SVA’s work must include doing what we can to overcome this corrosive, insidious influence. We will not stay silent.

Our thoughts are with Adam Goodes, his family and friends. The huge support shown to Adam over the weekend, on social media and at a host of other sporting and cultural events, was encouraging. But until everyone in Australia can go to school or work, and be free from discrimination, it’s not enough.

The Human Rights Commission’s ‘Racism. It Stops with Me’ campaign invites Australians to reflect on and stand up against racism wherever it happens. At SVA we will continue to use our influence both as an organisation, and as individuals, to create a fairer and more inclusive Australia, and to call racism wherever we see it.
